Planting Trees

Several years ago, my husband Michael and I began a blog (“Planting Trees”) to chronicle our family’s journey of adopting our son Gabriel. Although that blog no longer exists, all of that content now lives here on this site and has expanded to include everything I’ve written about our growing family since. The name of the blog was inspired by the song “Planting Trees,” by one of our favorite musicians, Andrew Peterson.

Without a question, 2016 was the year of Gabriel. It was a year of becoming family. A boy and a girl learning to be brother and sister; and mother and father learning to be parents of two.  Continue reading …

Keep Your Eyes on the Prize, Part 2–April 12, 2015

February 1, 2013–I typed the words “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize” as a blog entry. We had just learned that our expected 6-9 month wait to bring Gabriel Bilo home was now estimated to take 3-6 months more. For the sake of our fragile perspectives Continue reading…

Maybe Today–Oct. 19, 2014

Maybe today I can just sit here And let the soiled slacks sag on the hook; Leave the drawers dangling despite discomfort; Let the dust bunnies burrow underneath the bed.
Maybe I can just sit here staring at you. Maybe today I can just sit here And leave the stack Continue reading …

Bilo Erler–Aug. 20, 2013

First of all, we apologize that it has been all quiet on the Gabriel front for the past month and a half. While we have been silent on the blog, there has been anything but silence in regards to the adoption process. On July 5th–just two days after my last post Continue reading …

frayed-flip-flopsFrayed Flip Flops–July 3, 2013

It’s July 3rd, and still no news on the Gabriel front. We’re trying to wait patiently, knowing that there are many circumstances outside of our control. If you’re praying for us, would you please pray Continue reading …

Kobanga Te–Dec. 9, 2013

When we began the journey to adopt, we estimated that we would travel to pick up our son sometime this past summer. That was before a lot of things happened. As every month passes, we have eagerly looked forward to photo updates Continue reading …

Little Do We Know–April 21, 2013

It seems that with every slight piece of information we receive, there are countless other pieces of information we don’t receive. We are quickly learning that international adoptions are not for those who must have all the facts. Continue reading …

And Then God–March 2, 2013

In the midst of our waiting for a referral, we have been reminded that we are not the first people in the universe to wait for something. In fact, we are preceded by a long line of folks who waited much longer, much harder, some more patiently Continue reading …

‘Les Miserables’ and Adoption–Jan. 8, 2013

On Christmas evening, Michael and I joined my parents and siblings (and siblings-in-law) in the longstanding Sandvig family tradition of going to the movies for whatever blockbuster event the cinema world has been waiting for all year. This year of course Continue reading …

Planting Trees–Jan. 1, 2013

Since our wedding, Zoe and I have desired our shared life to be one of purpose and blessing. When we heard Andrew Peterson’s song “Planting Trees,” we knew we had discovered with what language we wanted to give expression to this desire. The image of planting trees as a metaphor or symbol Continue reading …
